Internships at Ford County Historical Society are diverse. Placements are made based on the interests and skills of the applicant and the availability of supervision and projects. Applicants should send resume and letter of interest to media@fordcountyhistory.org.
Project areas include:
Collections Management:
- Assist in cataloging, organizing, and preserving artifacts, documents, and other historical materials.
- Learn about proper handling, storage, and conservation techniques.
- Collaborate with museum staff to maintain accurate records of the collection.
Exhibition Support:
- Assist in developing and installing museum exhibits.
- Help with research, writing exhibit labels, and creating engaging displays.
- Learn about curatorial practices and storytelling through exhibits.
Educational Programs:
- Participate in educational outreach programs for schools, community groups, and visitors.
- Assist in planning and implementing workshops, tours, and special events.
- Develop educational materials related to historical topics.
Research and Documentation:
- Conduct historical research on specific topics related to the museum’s focus.
- Help create content for publications, websites, or social media.
- Learn about archival practices and primary source analysis
Visitor Services:
- Interact with museum visitors, answer questions, and provide information.
- Assist with visitor engagement activities, such as guided tours or workshops.
- Learn about effective communication and public engagement.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong interest in history, cultural heritage, or museum studies.
- Attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in research, writing, and communication.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to: Frequently use a keyboard and computer for long periods of time while remaining in a stationary position; frequently move about the building to access office equipment and files; and occasionally move about, sometimes on uneven ground, during programs for setup and implementation; and frequently lift objects weighing up to 25 lbs. and over with assistance. Assist in moving and setting up tables, chairs, and other furniture for exhibits and events.
Environmental Demands:
Must be able to: Consistently work in an office environment with moderate noise and lighting, and may be exposed to mold, dust, and chemicals; and occasionally handle seasonal weather conditions including extreme heat, humidity, cold, and/or biting/stinging bugs, during outdoor activities.
Schedule: Flexible hours over 8-10 weeks
Salary: $11 per hour
